Wolfsburg vs Borussia Dortmund

Volkswagen Arena is the venue as Wolfsburg and Borussia Dortmund go head-to-head in a tasty-looking Bundesliga clash.

Wolfsburg’s gut-wrenching start to the new calendar year hit a new low as a disastrous 1-0 defeat to relegation-battling Union Berlin took their winless tally to six matches (D4, L2). In the midst of their longest winless streak under Niko Kovac, Wolfsburg will hardly settle for anything less than three points, especially as they commence this round a whopping nine points adrift of the European spots. Perhaps more ominously, they languish only seven above the relegation places after drawing four of their five Bundesliga games in 2024! Another share of the spoils looks highly unlikely, considering none of Wolfsburg’s last 11 top-flight matches against Dortmund have ended level (W1, L10). Despite their disastrous form against ‘Die Borussen,’ they kept the reverse fixture competitive until the final whistle, though they eventually succumbed to a 1-0 loss.

On the other hand, Borussia Dortmund’s near-perfect start to 2024 continued last weekend with a 3-0 humbling of Freiburg on home turf, reinforcing the club’s top-four bid after a frustrating 0-0 draw at Heidenheim on their most recent Bundesliga travel. Now undefeated in their last seven top-flight outings (W4, D3), Edin Terzic’s men enter this round three points clear of fifth-placed RB Leipzig. With only unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen boasting fewer away league losses than ‘Die Borussen’ (1) this term, confidence will be at an all-time high around the visiting camp, especially after they’ve kept a clean sheet on their last three Bundesliga travels (W2, D1). Another shutout would see Dortmund make it four consecutive top-flight road trips without conceding for the first time since 1994.
