Werder Bremen vs Borussia Mönchengladbach 27/05/20
27 May 2020
Relegation-threatened Werder Bremen welcome the Bundesliga (BL) top-four fighters Borussia Mönchengladbach to the Weserstadion this midweek, hoping to put an end to their disappointing eight-game winless run in top-flight H2Hs (D2, L6).
A narrow 1-0 away win over Freiburg at the weekend has brought Werder’s dismal seven-game winless BL run to a halt (D1, L6), helping them reduce the gap on the safe zone to six points. However, the hosts now face another daunting prospect, as they have to defy a disastrous seven-game losing BL home streak to post their first league win on home turf in 2020. Not only that five of those seven home defeats came by at least a two-goal margin, but five have seen them draw a blank, too. Also, beating Mönchengladbach will not be easy, given that ‘Die Werderaner’ have lost all three of their previous top-flight H2Hs held at this venue.
As for the visitors, they’ve endured mixed fortunes in their last five league outings (W3, L2), with each of those fixtures seeing over 2.5 goals and both teams on the scoresheet. In turn, all four of Mönchengladbach’s previous BL away matches have produced over 3.5 goals and witnessed both sides find the net, with the ‘Foals’ winning the last three (D1). Marco Rose’s men will have to score the opening goal here to boost their chances of stretching their winning BL away run to four, considering they lost four of five BL road games in which they’ve conceded the first goal (W1).
