Werder Bremen vs Borussia Dortmund 04/05/19

5 May 2019

Saturday’s Bundesliga action concludes with a massive showdown between Werder Bremen and Borussia Dortmund at the Weserstadion, as the hosts still frantically chase European promotion.

Sitting four points adrift of seventh-placed TSG Hoffenheim, the hosts are still claiming stakes on the Europa League promotion, with three league games left to go. However, a run of poor form has seen Werder picked up just four points from their last four Bundesliga fixtures (W1, D1, L2), as they hope to bounce back after suffering back-to-back league defeats. Nonetheless, Florian Kohfeldt’s men have been impressive at home in 2019, pulling off four wins in six BL home outings since the turn of the year (W4, D2). Notably, Die Werderaner have netted 2+ match goals five times in that period although preserving a clean slate just once in the process. Another potential worry for their home fans is the fact that Die Grün-Weißen failed to beat BVB in all three of their previous H2Hs at this venue (D1, L2), with all of those clashes featuring goals on both ends.

Meanwhile, a horror 4-2 home loss to arch-rivals Schalke 04 last time out has lowered the visitors’ chances of overthrowing Bayern Munich, as they now have to overturn a two-point gap. What’s more, Lucien Favre’s men have endured mixed fortunes in their last six BL road matches (W2, D2, L2), with all four of their previous BL away games featuring over 2.5 match goals. Dortmund’s defensive frailties have seen them concede over 1.5 match goals in three of their seven BL away fixtures in 2019 although they’ve still managed to keep a clean sheet three times since the turn of the year. BVB’s main problem here could, however, be the fact they’ve scored 2+ away match goals just twice since the Christmas break, struggling to find the net three times in the process.
