Werder Bremen vs Borussia Dortmund 22/02/20

22 February 2020

Backed by a 2-1 home success against PSG in the Champions League, Borussia Dortmund return to the Bundesliga (BL) action this weekend as they head to the Weserstadion to take on relegation-threatened Werder Bremen.

The hosts have failed to build on a 1-0 away win over Fortuna Dusseldorf in their first league fixture in the new calendar year, suffering four successive defeats since. As a consequence, ‘Die Werderaner’ have slipped to 17th in the table and currently trail 15th-placed Mainz by five points. Frustratingly for the home fans, only five of Werder’s 17 league points came at the Weserstadion (29.41%). What’s more, Florian Kohfeldt’s men have lost five consecutive league games here, drawing a blank in the last four. Indeed, Werder remain the only side in Germany’s top-flight yet to reach double figures at home, having scored just eight goals in ten BL games here so far this season. Another potential worry for Werder is that they’ve failed to beat Dortmund in each of their last four BL home H2Hs (D2, L2), conceding over 1.5 goals on three of those occasions.

As for the visitors, they’ve won four of five league matches since the turn of the year (L1), scoring over 2.5 goals in each while adding at least one more in those successes. Sitting four points below league-toppers Bayer Munich, ‘Die Borussen’ desperately need to secure a victory here, but a lack of consistency when away from home could be setting them back. In fact, they’ve lost twice in their last three BL road trips (W1), with each of those games seeing over 2.5 goals and both teams on the scoresheet. Arguably the most intimidating attack in Germany, Lucien Favre’s men have already netted 63 BL goals, but only 36.51% of them came away from home. Particularly ponderous in the first 45 minutes, they’ve managed just 39% of the 23 away goals scored before the break.
