Werder Bremen vs Bayer Leverkusen 19/05/20
19 May 2020
Werder Bremen and Bayer Leverkusen go head-to-head at the Weserstadion in what promises to be a ‘high-scoring’ Bundesliga (BL) affair. Indeed, all three of their previous top-flight H2Hs have seen over 3.5 goals and both teams on the scoresheet.
Although a 2-2 away draw with Hertha BSC brought Werder’s six-game losing BL run to a halt, the hosts will have to fight tooth and nail to avoid relegation as they sit eight points adrift of the safe zone. Frustratingly for Marco Bode, his players have not only conceded over 1.5 goals in their last seven league fixtures, but they’ve also drawn a blank on five of those occasions. It goes from bad to worse for ‘Die Werderaner‘ when they play at home, considering they’ve secured just a single win in 11 league matches at the Weserstadion (D2, L8), which makes them the worst home side in Germany’s top-flight.
Meanwhile, the visitors are very much in contention for the top-four finish, as they trail fourth-placed Borussia Monchengladbach by just two points. Also, ‘Die Werkself‘ were unbeaten in five straight BL fixtures before the coronavirus pandemic halted club campaign (W4, D1), scoring over 2.5 goals in three of those four triumphs. Only two sides have returned more BL away points than Leverkusen (22) this season, with five of their seven wins on the road coming against the clubs from the bottom half of the table. It will be vital for Peter Bosz’s side to draw first blood here, as they returned just one point from four BL away matches in which they’ve shipped the opening goal.
