United States vs Mexico 07/09/19
7 September 2019
The United States and Mexico return to action this week, as they prepare to face off at MetLife Stadium for an international friendly challenge.
Eager to bounce back after their Gold CUP (GC) disappointment, the USMNT will have revenge on their minds when the two CONCACAF heavyweights lock horns, as El Tri were the ones to deny them from clinching back-to-back GC titles for the first time in the history. Before losing 1-0 to Mexico in the GC final, the Yanks have won all five of their preceding games in the competition, four of which have been accompanied by a blank sheet. But, if the Stars and Stripes do lose here, it would probably be to nil, as all three of their defeats since the turn of the year saw them fail to find the back of the net, with two of those matches ending with the same 1-0 scoreline.
Meanwhile, the visitors have been outstanding since the turn of the year, securing eight wins in ten outings in 2019 (W8, D2). Although just two of those victories saw El Tri preserve a clean slate, seven have witnessed them score three or more goals. However, Mexico’s recent H2H record against the USMNT might trouble Gerardo Martino, who is yet to suffer a failure since taking charge of the national team. The reigning GC holders have prevailed in just two of their last 11 H2Hs with the USA (W2, D5, L4), with five of their previous six H2H clashes featuring under 2.5 goals.
