Union Berlin vs Bayern Munich 15/03/20

15 March 2020

Union Berlin and Bayern Munich go head-to-head at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei, as the traveling side look to emulate the same performance that brought them a 2-1 win in the reverse fixture.

The hosts have endured mixed fortunes in their last five Bundesliga (BL) outings (W2, D1, L2), with the four previous all seeing over 2.5 goals and both teams on the scoresheet. The majority (76.47%) of action during that stretch took place in the second half, with 13 of 17 goals (scored and conceded) across those five matches coming after the break. In turn, 61.76% of Union’s total BL home goals (scored/conceded) arrived in the second half of play (21/34). Curiously, before playing out a 2-2 draw with Wolfsburg, none of their 11 BL home fixtures prior had ended in a stalemate (W6, L5), with seven of those results (win/loss) yielding a multiple-goal margin. Indeed, five of their last seven home results have come via the identical 2-0 scoreline.

Meanwhile, the visitors have been a force to be reckoned with since the turn of the year, winning all but one of their 11 competitive matches, with the last four successes all yielding clean sheets. A notable upturn in results has propelled Bayern four points clear of second-placed Borussia Dortmund, as they enter this round on a run of four consecutive BL wins, all of which have seen them score at least two total match goals and shut out their opponent before the 40-minute mark. Lapses of concentration after the break have witnessed 67% of their BL away goals conceded so far come in the second half (10/15). Yet, virtually unstoppable in the final third, the Bavarians have netted 35 league goals away from home thus far – more than any other side, with 19 of them arriving before halftime.
