Tottenham Hotspur vs Southampton 28/09/19

Rocked by a shock Carabao Cup elimination to fourth-tier outfit Colchester, Tottenham Hotspur will look to return to winning ways when they take on Southampton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this weekend.

The hosts are enduring a torrid time in the early stage of the season having won just two of the opening six Premier League (PL) fixtures (W2, D2, L2). Both of those Spurs’ wins have come at home and saw them beat their rivals by a margin of multiple goals, while both of their PL losses witnessed them go down by a narrow one-goal margin. Tottenham’s inability to keep a clean sheet has seen them concede at least one goal in five league games this term, allowing over 1.5 goals twice in the process. But, an encouraging fact for Mauricio Pochettino is that his side won seven of the last eight PL H2Hs with Southampton at home (W7, L1).

Meanwhile, the visitors can’t maintain consistency this term having already suffered three league defeats so far (W2, D1, L3). Immense difficulties in the final third saw Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side score one goal or less in five PL matches so far, netting zero first-half goals in the process. While both of their PL away triumphs witnessed them beat their rivals to nil and score two goals or less, Southampton’s only defeat on the road came to nil and saw them concede three goals. Notably, all six goals seen in the Saints’ away matches have come in the second half, with five of them arriving beyond the hour mark.
