Tottenham Hotspur vs Newcastle United 27/09/20

27 September 2020

Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United go head-to-head at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for a potentially low-scoring Premier League affair. Four of their last six top-flight H2Hs have featured under 2.5 goals and one team drawing a blank.

The hosts have bounced back from a 1-0 home loss to Everton in their Premier League curtain-raiser, dismantling Southampton 5-2 on the road last time out. Additionally, midweek’s 3-1 Europa League qualifying win over Macedonian outfit Shkendija means that all three of Tottenham’s competitive wins this season have come despite a -1 handicap. By contrast, none of their previous five home Premier League games has ended in a draw (W4, L1), last season included, with four of those results (wins/loss) seeing the winner on the day keep a clean sheet. In turn, three of their last top-flight H2Hs held in London have yielded the identical 1-0 scoreline (W2, L1).

On the other hand, the visitors have endured mixed fortunes in their opening two Premier League games (W1, L1), with both of those results yielding a clean sheet and at least a two-goal margin. The ‘Magpies’ have struggled for consistency on the road this calendar year (W3, D3, L4), with 71.43% (five) of those seven results seeing the winner on the day shut out the loser. Much of Newcastle’s away difficulties last season came as a result of their goal-scoring problems that saw Steve Bruce’s men net an average of just 0.94 goals per Premier League trip. Also, scoring against Tottenham in London has often been challenging for Newcastle, as they’ve drawn a blank in six of their previous 11 competitive away H2Hs.
