Tottenham Hotspur vs Newcastle United 02/01/19

02 February 2019

Two teams that come off a successful midweek face-off at the Wembley Stadium as Tottenham Hotspur host Newcastle United.

The hosts defeated Watford 2-1 at Wembley in midweek’s clash after pulling off an outstanding second-half comeback to secure back-to-back Premier League wins and extend the gap on Arsenal and Chelsea. The Spurs are still the only team in the English top tier that is yet to play out a draw (W18, L6), but four of their six failures came at home. Nonetheless, Mauricio Pochettino’s men have won eight of their last ten home encounters across all competitions (W8, L2), conceding under 1.5 goals per match nine times in the sequence. Tottenham’s difficulties in the final third have, however, seen them score under 1.5 goals per game in five of the previous eight competitive home outings.

Meanwhile, the visitors come into this meeting following a stunning 2-1 home win over Manchester City, which was their second successive PL triumph after two straight failures. However, the Magpies are winless in their last three PL road races (D1, L2), having conceded seven while scored just two goals in the process. While Tottenham remain the only team without a draw, Rafael Benitez’s players have played out more draws away from home than any other side in the English top flight (5). All of Newcastle’s five draws have produced under 2.5 goals, with three of them ending with the identical 0-0 scoreline. Still uncomfortable on the road, the Magpies have managed to score over 1.5 goals on just one of their 11 PL road trips, failing to hit the net four times in the process.

The last 13 H2H meetings between these two have ended with a winner, with eight of those games going in Tottenham’s favor.
