Tottenham Hotspur vs Newcastle United 25/08/19
25 August 2019
Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United will face-off at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in contrasting circumstances. While the hosts returned four points after the opening two rounds of Premier Leauge (PL) fixtures, the visitors are still chasing their elusive first points in the new league campaign.
After performing a stunning second-half comeback to beat Aston Villa 3-1 at home in the PL curtain-raiser, the Spurs have managed to hold Manchester City to a 2-2 away draw last time out. The hosts are now hopeful that they can post their fifth consecutive PL win over Newcastle, with three of their previous four triumphs in H2Hs saw them beat the Magpies to nil. Impressive when at home lately, Mauricio Pochettino’s men have won seven of their last ten PL home games (W7, D2, L1), five of which have seen them outplay their rivals without conceding a goal. Interestingly though, the Spurs have failed to take a first-half lead in five of their previous seven PL home outings.
As for the visitors, they’ve endured a disappointing start to the season having suffered back-to-back losses to Arsenal and Norwich City. The Magpies have not only barely scored one goal across those games, but they’ve produced just five shots on target, with just two of these attempts coming in the second half. Another potential problem for Steve Bruce could be Newcastle’s disastrous away form in 2019, as they’ve pulled off only two wins in ten PL trips since the turn of the year (W2, D3, L5). Three of those defeats have come against teams that finished in top-five last year and have been accompanied by a -4 goal difference (S1, C5).
