Switzerland vs Spain

Stade de Genève is the venue as Switzerland and Spain battle it out for their maiden wins in the 2022/23 UEFA Nations League campaign.

Switzerland’s Nations League campaign has been a complete disaster so far. After an underwhelming 2-1 defeat to the section outsiders Czech Republic in their Group A2 curtain-raiser, the Swiss succumbed to an embarrassing 4-0 defeat at Portugal last time out. With just one win to their name across their last ten Nations League fixtures (D3, L6), Murat Yakin’s men look like early relegation candidates. Unfortunately for the home fans, Switzerland have developed a habit of falling behind early in the game, having conceded the opening goal within 16 minutes in both Group A2 outings thus far. Switzerland’s hopes of escaping the foot of the group table look a bit far-fetched as they take on Spain, whom they failed to beat in their last four meetings (D2, L2).

In the meantime, Spain hit back twice to hold the Czech Republic to an enthralling 2-2 draw last time out, making it two stalemates from as many Group A2 fixtures. However, a 1-1 draw with Portugal on Matchday 1, coupled with that result against the Czechs, forms part of Spain’s impressive 16-game scoring run. Delivering action from the offset, Luis Enrique’s lads have netted five of their last seven goals on hostile turf inside the first 45 minutes of play. Yet, Spain’s relatively slow start to the new Nations League campaign by their high standards represents a dip in form. ‘La Furia Roja’ had won four consecutive internationals after losing to France in last season’s Nations League final before drawing both Group A2 matches.
