Standard Liege vs Borussia Dortmund 07/01/20
7 January 2020
Standard Liege and Borussia Dortmund will face off at the Estadio Municipal Antonio Lorenzo Cuevas for a friendly meeting this midweek.
Standard will be looking to take advantage of the winter break to try to bounce back after a dismal end to 2019 that saw them rack up a six-game winless streak in all competitions (D3, L3). Notably, all but one of those matches during that six-game sequence have seen both teams score, with five of them producing over 2.5 goals. Interestingly, Les Rouges have found the opening goal in nine of their last ten outings, letting the lead slip out of their grasps on six of those occasions (W3, D4, L2). A free-scoring form should help Standard score against Dortmund for the first time after three consecutive friendlies that all saw them draw a blank and lose by a multiple-goal margin.
Meanwhile, Dortmund’s dip in form has seen them go from three successive triumphs to back-to-back games without a win (D1, L1). Still, all five of those fixtures have produced over 2.5 goals, with three witnessing both teams score. Curiously, both of Dortmund’s previous matches have seen them take at least a one-goal lead into halftime and letting it slip through their fingers after the break. A fast start is on the cards, as the BVB found the opening goal inside the first 33 minutes in each of their last four outings. That is very much in line with three of their previous successes against Standard that have all seen them break the deadlock in the opening half an hour.
