Southampton vs Wolverhampton Wanderers 13/04/19

13 April 2019

Rocked by the FA Cup elimination to Watford, Wolverhampton Wanderers travel to St. Mary’s Stadium to tackle relegation-threatened Southampton.

Sitting five points clear of 18th-placed Cardiff City, the hosts have yet to secure their top-flight status, which is why they need to make the most out of this clash. A rough Premier League campaign, highlighted by a lot of ups and downs threatens to ship the Saints to Championship, as they go into this meeting off the back of a 3-1 home loss to Liverpool. Southampton’s indifferent home form (W4, D6, L6) is also a potential problem for Ralph Hasenhüttl, with his side experiencing mixed fortunes in their last five PL home outings (W2, D1, L2). Additionally, Southampton have clinched just one triumph in four home H2Hs with the PL’s bottom-six teams (W1, D2, L1), which could also worry their home fans.

Meanwhile, the visitors are looking to secure the Europa League promotion in their first season after returning to the top flight, as they currently reside eighth with the same 47 point tally like Leicester City although they have one game in hand. Wolves’ main problem in the recent period has been their away displays that have seen them failed to wrap up all three points in all four of their previous PL road trips (D2, L2), with all of those four games featuring under 2.5 goals. The one thing Nuno Espirito Santo should focus on is his team’s attacking output, as they’ve failed to score 2+ match goals in five of their previous seven league home encounters. But, having outplayed Manchester United 2-1 in their last PL fixture, the Wanderers now chase back-to-back league wins for the first time since early February.
