Southampton vs Manchester United 31/09/19
31 August 2019
Saturday’s Premier League (PL) action starts at St. Mary’s Stadium as Southampton take on Manchester United who they’ve failed to beat in their last six PL H2Hs (D3, L3).
After back-to-back PL defeats at the beginning of the new season, the hosts have managed to bounce back and post their first league triumph this term by beating Brighton 2-0 away from home last time out. However, the Saints have secured just one win in their previous five PL home games (W1, D2, L2) although none of those matches has been short of entertainment. While all of those games saw both teams score and witnessed goals in both halves, three have featured over 3.5 goals. Interestingly, all four of Southampton’s home wins since the turn of the year have seen them score 2+ match goals although only one has been accompanied by a clean sheet.
Although the visitors got off to a flying start in the PL by beating Chelsea 4-0 at home in the opening matchday, they’ve failed to replicate that performance in the two subsequent league outings (D1, L1). A 1-1 away draw with Wolverhampton means the Red Devils are winless in their last five PL trips (D2, L3) scoring one goal or less across all of those games. But, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have won six straight PL away matches before finding themselves stuck in a crisis, four of which have seen them beat their rivals to nil. United have won five of their previous eight PL visits to this venue (W5, D3), with their last away loss to Southampton dating back to 2003.
