Southampton vs Liverpool 17/08/19
17 August 2019
Southampton and Liverpool will face off at St. Mary’s Stadium in quite contrasting circumstances.
Another nightmarish start to the league campaign has seen the hosts suffer a 3-0 away loss to Burnley in the Premier League opener. The Saints have now struggled to pick up three points in six straight PL outings (D3, L3), allowing precisely three goals per match on four occasions in the process. An encouraging fact for Ralph Hasenhüttl can be that his players have pulled off three wins in their previous six PL home games (W3, D2, L1), even though just one of those matches has been accompanied by a clean sheet. Also, Southampton have found the back of the net in all 15 of their previous home games across all competitions, scoring 2+ match goals six times though.
On the other hand, fresh from winning the UEFA Super Cup, the visitors will look to post their fifth consecutive win over Southampton. After narrowly missing out on the PL title last season, the Reds have started the new league campaign off on the right foot having swept Norwich City aside with a commanding 4-1 home win on the opening matchday. As a result, the Merseyside giants have now scored 2+ match goals in all ten of their previous PL outings, registering as many triumphs in the process. But, Jurgen Klopp has yet to solve his team’s defensive frailties that have seen them concede at least one goal in nine straight games in the build-up to this fixture.
