San Marino vs Belgium 07/09/19
7 September 2019
San Marino welcome Belgium to the Stadio Olimpico for the UEFA European Championship qualification (ECQ) ‘David versus Goliath’ affair.
The hosts’ dreadful 26-game competitive losing streak is unlikely to end here, especially as they’ve failed to find the back of the net in their previous 18 home matches in all competitions (D1, L17). It’s been two years since San Marino last scored a goal (L12), with 11 of those defeats seeing them lose by a multiple-goal margin. Nailed to the bottom of Group I, La Serenissima lost all four of their ECQ matches so far, conceding a total of 20 goals without scoring once. Interestingly though, they did manage to score against Belgium in both of their last H2Hs here, losing both of those clashes nonetheless.
Meanwhile, with four wins from as many ECQ games, the visitors currently top the group, with all of those triumphs seeing them beat their opponents by a multiple-goal margin. Also, De Rode Duivels pulled off seven victories in their last nine competitive trips (W7, L2), all of which have seen them score two or more goals. Belgium outplayed San Marino in all six of their competitive H2Hs, with five of those triumphs seeing them come out on top by at least three-goal margin. Additionally, five of their seven competitive wins in the post-World Cup period were accompanied by a clean sheet, and all have seen them score 2+ match goals.
