Republic of Ireland vs Denmark 14/10/18
14 October 2018
The Republic of Ireland and Denmark are set for a face-to-face encounter at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, as the visitors look to secure the top position in the UEFA Nations League Group B4.
After failing to qualify for the World Cup, the Boys in Green have lost two successive friendlies to Turkey and France, without scoring a goal. Martin O’Neill’s problems in 2018 have continued in spite of a 2-1 win over the United States, as his side suffered a devastating 4-1 defeat to Wales on the UEFA Nations League opening matchday. Even in the last friendly match, the UK-based team failed to achieve a victory, having been held to a 1-1 draw with Poland.
On the other hand, after the World Cup elimination by Croatia in the round of 16, the Danish Dynamite have gone through a difficult time, where the entire first-team squad refused to represent the country in a friendly match against Slovakia due to a public dispute with the Danish Football Association. Forced to field the amateur and futsal players, the Tin Soldiers have been hammered by the Falcons. However, the national team have managed to resolve the issue with the DBU before facing Wales in the Nations League, after which they comfortably defeated the Dragons by two goals to nil.
The two sides have already faced-off against each other this year, with Denmark demolishing the Republic of Ireland in the World Cup two-legged play-offs by five goals to one on the road to advance to the final tournament.
Graham Burke, Alan Judge, Greg Cunningham, Daryl Horgan, Richie Towell, and Ronan Curtis are all omitted from O’Neill’s final list for different reasons. As for the visitors, Tottenham Hotspurs star Christian Eriksen won’t be able to help their teammates due to some physical problems that have been troubling him for the past couple of weeks, while Ajax’s Kasper Dolberg returned to the national team after being left out of the World Cup squad.
