Real Sociedad vs Real Madrid 21/09/20

21 September 2020

Newly-crowned La Liga champions Real Madrid travel to the Reale Seguros Stadium to take on Real Sociedad in a potentially high-scoring contest. Indeed, all four of their previous competitive H2Hs have seen over 2.5 goals and both teams on the scoresheet.

Real Sociedad played out a 1-1 away draw with Real Valladolid on Matchday 1, with both goals coming inside the 15 minutes before and after half-time. ‘La Real’ finished the last season pretty much in the same fashion, being held to two straight draws in the 2019/20 finale, both of which yielded under 2.5 goals too. Imanol Alguacil will be desperate to see his team step up their home game, though, as ‘Txuri-Urdinak’ managed no more than a single win from the final six La Liga home matches back in 2019/20 (W1, D2, L3). Real Madrid’s visit doesn’t really fit the bill, given that four of their previous five top-flight H2Hs held at this venue have resulted in Sociedad’s defeat (W1).

Meanwhile, the visitors have been by far the most impressive Spanish side since the resumption of football in mid-June, racking up ten wins from 11 La Liga fixtures since the restart (D1). Remarkably, six of those ten victories have been accompanied by a clean sheet, which was the case in 54.55% of Real Madrid’s away league wins last season (6/11). Surprisingly, though, a clear majority (71.43%) of Madrid’s La Liga results (wins/losses) away from home back in 2019/20 yielded a narrow one-goal margin. Notably, strong first-half performers, Zinedine Zidane’s men found themselves trailing on the half-time break only once in 19 La Liga trips last term (HT: W6, D12, L1).
