RB Leipzig vs Bayern Munich 11/05/19
11 May 2019
RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich go toe-to-toe at the Red Bull Arena for a massive Bundesliga showdown that can seal Bayern’s league crown should they dodge a failure.
Although a 3-3 away draw with Mainz last weekend brought the hosts’ five-game Bundesliga winning run to a halt, they’ve still managed to stretch their unbeaten streak across all competitions to 17 games (W12, D5). Additionally, the Red Bulls have gone from three straight BL home draws to three consecutive triumphs, in which they’ve scored nine goals and conceded barely one. Leipzig’s main strength in 2019 has been their impenetrable defense that has allowed just three goals in seven BL home outings since the turn of the year. However, Ralf Ragnick’s men have forbidden their fans for entertainment in that span, as just two of those clashes have featured over 2.5 goals.
The visitors are one step away from clinching their seventh successive Bundesliga title as they need to wrap up one point in the remaining two league fixtures to mathematically win the ultimate prize. Ever since a 3-1 loss to Bayer Leverkusen back in February, the Bavarians have gone from strength to strength in the league, racking up an impressive 12-game unbeaten BL run (W10, D2). Interestingly, both of those draws have come on the road against teams from the bottom half of the table, with both ending with the same 1-1 scoreline. If Bayern win here, it will probably see Leipzig concede at least two goals given the fact all 11 of the Reds’ away BL triumphs have seen them net over 1.5 match goals. Even though Niko Kovac’s men have failed to preserve a blank slate on all seven of their BL road trips in 2019, they can still boast BL’s joint-best defensive record having allowed 18 goals in 16 BL away fixtures.
