PSV Eindhoven vs Basel 24/07/19

24 July 2019

PSV Eindhoven welcome Basel to the Philips Stadion for the first leg of their Champions League second qualifying round tie.

PSV finished as the runners-up in the Eredivisie last term, and it will be their first competitive match since a 3-1 home win over Heracles back in May. Preparing for the CL qualifiers, Mark van Bommel’s players have played out four friendlies this summer, but they’ve struggled to impress across those games (W1, D1, L2). While both of their defeats in that period, against Wolfsburg and Nice, saw them concede over 1.5 goals per match, the Lightbulbs have kept a clean sheet in the other two games. Still, PSV’s home record in competitive matches over the past few months can encourage their home fans, as they’ve pulled off ten wins in their last 11 home outings across all competitions (W10, D1).

On the other hand, the visitors secured a commanding 4-1 away triumph over Sion in the opening match of the 2019-20 Swiss Super League campaign a few days ago. It was Basel’s 13th win in their last 15 outings (W13, L2), with 11 of those victories seeing them score three or more goals. Moreover, Bebbi have been impressive when away from home in 2019, pulling off nine wins on 12 road trips across all competitions since the turn of the year (W9, D2, L1). Notably, six of those triumphs have seen them beat their rivals to nil, while nine have seen them score 2+ match goals.
