Paris Saint-Germain vs Borussia Dortmund 12/03/20

12 March 2020

A 2-1 win in Germany gives Borussia Dortmund a slight advantage over Paris Saint-Germain going into the return leg of their UEFA Champions League (CL) last-16 tie that will take place at the Parc des Princes this week.

Yet, the hosts can rely on their free-scoring form to help them cancel off the BVB’s lead, considering they’ve scored over 3.5 goals in seven of their last nine competitive outings, winning all but two of them (D1, L1). In turn, Thomas Tuchel’s men have racked up an impressive 13-game unbeaten home run in all competitions (W12, D1), netting at least three goals in the last eight such fixtures. Additionally, the perennial Ligue 1 champions finished the group stage with a maximum of three home victories, keeping a clean sheet in each while scoring over 2.5 goals in two. But, that’s a sharp contrast to PSG’s overall competitive record against Dortmund (D2, L1), and the fact that they’ve scored one goal or less in each of those H2Hs.

In the meantime, the visitors have hit the purple patch, as they come into this encounter after picking up five successive triumphs in all competitions. Importantly, three of those successes saw Dortmund shut out their rivals, with four seeing them score 2+ goals. However, except for a 2-0 triumph over Slavia Praha on Matchday 2, ‘Die Borussen’ have lost both of their other CL away fixtures this season without hitting the net. A potential stumbling block in Dortmund’s efforts to reach the quarter-finals could be the fact that they’ve won only twice in their last nine CL knockout stage matches (D2, L5). Their indifferent two-legged tie record against the French clubs could also be throwing a spanner in the works (W3, L2), especially as their last such contest produced a 6-3 aggregate loss to Monaco in 2016/17.
