Nurnberg vs. RB Leipzig
RB Leipzig will be looking to bring their winning run against Nurnberg to three when the two sides meet at the Max-Morlock-Stadion in the DFB Pokal round of 64 this weekend.
Nurnberg barely avoided relegation to the 3. Liga last season, overcoming Ingolstadt in the play-offs on the away goal rule (2-0 H, 1-3 A). In fact, a 2-0 home success against Ingolstadt represents just one of Nurnberg’s two victories from 11 competitive matches since the resumption of football in May (D5, L4). Low scoring has been a theme for ‘Der Club’ post restart, as seven of those 11 fixtures featured under 2.5 goals. Additionally, a lack of firepower in the final third saw Robert Klauß’s side score one goal or less eight times during the 11-game sequence. But, one goal could be all it takes to progress, given two of their three competitive H2Hs held at this venue yielded a 1-0 scoreline (W2, L1).
Meanwhile, this will be Leipzig’s first competitive game since succumbing to a 3-0 loss to PSG in the Champions League semi-finals back in August. That failure marked only their second defeat in their last 18 outings across various competitions (W9, D7). It also means that eight of their 11 results (wins/losses) during that 18-game sequence saw the winner on the day preserve a blank sheet. Yet, Leipzig’s last season’s DFB Pokal journey ended away from home, with Eintracht Frankfurt securing a comfortable 3-1 triumph. However, ‘Die Roten Bullen’ are unbeaten in eight consecutive trips (W6, D2), shutting out their hosts on six of those occasions.
