Newcastle United vs Tottenham Hotspur 16/07/20

16 July 2020

Tottenham Hotspur head to St. James Park to take on Newcastle United, looking to post a third successive triumph in the Premier League H2Hs.

The hosts have endured a dip in form lately, going from six straight Premier League fixtures without a loss (W3, D3) to two consecutive defeats, both of which saw them concede over 1.5 second-half goals and draw a blank inside the same timeframe. But, a lack of second-half goals has not been a problem for Newcastle this season. Indeed, the Magpies have scored the majority (72.22%) of the Premier League home goals after the break (13/18). Also, despite conceding the opening goal (if any) in eight of 17 Premier League home games this term, Steve Bruce’s men have shown the ability to fight their way back into the match – Newcastle lost only three applicable clashes (W2, D3).

On the other hand, four of Tottenham’s six league fixtures post restart have ended separating the sides by under 1.5 goals (W3, D2, L1), which has been true in six of their seven Premier League trips this calendar year (W1, D3, L3). However, despite failing to find their footing away from home since the turn of the year, Spurs can take some confidence from the fact they’ve won four of their last five top-flight trips to Newcastle (L1). Interestingly, all of those victories have seen Tottenham net over 1.5 goals, which has been the case in each of their three Premier League away wins this term. Yet, Jose Mourinho will be desperate to see his team step up their first-half performances after watching Spurs draw a blank before the halftime whistle in four of their last league trips (D2, L2).
