Montpellier vs Paris Saint-Germain 01/05/19

1 May 2019

Devastated by a shock defeat to Stade Rennes in Coupe de France final, Paris Saint-Germain return to the Ligue 1 action this midweek as they travel to the Stade de la Mosson to take on Montpellier.

The hosts’ lack of consistency over their previous six L1 fixtures (W3, D1, L2) would probably cost them top-four finish, as they currently sit eight points adrift of fourth-placed St. Etienne. Although La Paillade scored precisely two goals per match in all six of their previous L1 home outings, they’ve returned just 11 points (W3, D2, L1), mainly thanks to the fact they’ve failed to preserve a clean slate four times across those clashes while allowing 2+ match goals three times in the process. Also, Michel Der Zakarian’s men have yet to pick up all three points against the L1’s top-four sides at home this term (D2, L1), with all three of those clashes featuring under 2.5 goals. Notably, though, seven of Montpellier’s last nine L1 games have produced over 2.5 goals with all seven featuring goals on both ends.

Meanwhile, the visitors are going through a dreadful period having lost three of their last five competitive outings (W1, D1, L3), with Thomas Tuchel’s players conceding over 1.5 match goals four times in that span. What’s more, the reigning holders have suffered back-to-back L1 defeats in the build-up to this meeting, allowing over 2.5 match goals in each. Also, the Parisians have not enjoyed much success on their previous two visits to this venue (D1, L1) failing to find the net both times. Nonetheless, with 37 goals scored on 16 L1 road trips, PSG boast the best away scoring record in the French top tier, as they remain the only team to score in every single away league game this term.
