Martinique vs Mexico 24/06/19

24 June 2019

Martinique will try to battle their way to the knockout phase when they tackle Mexico at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte for the final fixture of the Gold Cup Group A.

After being hammered 4-0 by Canada at the opening matchday, Les Matinino managed to bounce back and pull off a 3-0 triumph over Cuba in the second round of fixtures. A good run of form has seen Martinique clinch five wins in their last six outings (W5, L1), with four of those triumphs being accompanied by a clean sheet while Mario Bocaly’s men netted over 2.5 match goals on three occasions during the run. Nonetheless, it will be a daunting prospect for Martinique to secure all three points here as they’ve suffered two defeats in as many H2Hs with Mexico, conceding 12 goals while scoring just one across those meetings.

Meanwhile, the leading favorites to win the tournament have already sealed their place in the knockout stage after pulling off back-to-back victories in the opening two Gold Cup fixtures. Sitting top of Group A with a +9 goal difference (S10, C1), El Tri are now on a six-game winning run, with all of those triumphs seeing them score 3+ goals per match. However, Gerardo Martino has yet to solve Mexico’s defensive problems that have seen them concede at least one goal in 14 of their last 15 outings. Interestingly, all six of Mexico’s last games have featured over 3.5 goals while five of them witnessed goals at both ends.
