Leicester City vs Southampton 09/01/20

9 January 2020

Leicester City and Southampton go head-to-head at the King Power Stadium, with the visitors chasing their third successive Premier League (PL) away triumph.

Leicester registered a record-breaking 9-0 victory over Southampton the last time these two sides faced off, and they have a two-game winning PL run to boost their confidence ahead of this fixture. But, the Foxes have failed to pick up a win in their previous two PL home matches (D1, L1), scoring a total of one goal across those games while conceding five. Additionally, they’ve failed to beat Southampton in all three of their last PL home H2Hs (D2, L1), drawing a blank in two of those meetings. But, that’s a sharp contrast to Leicester’s home form over the past few months that saw Brendan Rodgers’ men put together seven consecutive top-flight home wins before succumbing to a 4-0 defeat to table-toppers Liverpool. Interestingly, although they’ve shipped the opening goal in five of their ten PL home matches this campaign, the Foxes have pulled off three comebacks (W3, D1, L1).

Meanwhile, the visitors travel to Leicester on a five-game unbeaten run in all competitions (W4, D1), desperate to extend a five-point gap on relegation-threatened Bournemouth. Curiously, three of Southampton’s wins in the above five-game sequence have been accompanied by a clean sheet, with three coming via a two-goal margin too. Also, a sudden rise has seen Ralph Hasenhüttl’s players secure back-to-back PL away wins after failing to secure a single triumph in five previous road trips (D2, L3). The Saints have rarely disappointed in terms of goals when away from home recently, as six of their previous seven PL road fixtures have seen both teams score, with four of them producing over 2.5 goals.
