Japan vs Trinidad and Tobago 05/06/19

5 June 2019

Japan and Trinidad and Tobago will face-off at Toyota Stadium Aichi Prefecture for an international friendly, which will be the first H2H meeting between these two nations following Japan’s 2-0 win in 2006.

The hosts have been going from strength to strength after exiting the 2018 FIFA World Cup, having racked up an 11-game unbeaten run (W10, D1). However, Japan’s sudden drop-off in form has seen them suffer two defeats in their last three outings (W1, L2), although they come into this encounter off the back of a narrow 1-0 win over Bolivia. Interestingly, four of Samurai Blue’s last six games have ended with the identical 1-0 scoreline (W3, L1), while the remaining two matches have featured over 2.5 goals.

Meanwhile, for the visitors, goals have been at a premium lately. They have lost four of their previous five games (W1, L4), all of them by the same 1-0 scoreline. Notably, all four of those matches have seen the identical 0-0 scoreline at halftime. The Soca Warriors’ only victory in that period has come against the Asian nation, with Dennis Lawrence’s men beating the United Arab Emirates 2-0. The last time that Trinidad & Tobago’s match has produced over 2.5 goals dates back to November 2017, with the North Americans playing out a 2-2 draw with Grenada.
