Iceland vs Switzerland 16/10/18

16 October 2018

After snatching a surprising 2-2 draw with France in an international friendly, Iceland will host Switzerland at the Laugardalsvöllur in Reykjavík, hoping to get their first points in the UEFA Nations League.

Our Boys have lost the opening two matches in the new UEFA competitions, as they’ve suffered a humiliating 6-0 defeat to their next opponents, before getting hammered by Belgium at home by three goals to nil. After two straight wins at the beginning of the year, Iceland have failed to secure a victory in the following ten games, losing seven times in the process. Furthermore, Erik Hamrén’s side only kept a clean sheet once in the previous fourteen games in all competitions but are yet to do that in 2018.

On the other hand, the Nati have finished their World Cup participation in the round of 16, having suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Sweden. Although the Rossocrociati outplayed Iceland in the first post-World Cup encounter, they’ve lost two straight times after that. Only last weekend, Vladimir Petkovic’s side were outclassed by Belgium in the Nations League second round. However, Switzerland have never lost a match against Strákarnir okkar, as the two sides faced-off against each other seven times so far, with the Swiss’ team wrapping up six wins.

Alfred Finnbogason and Gylfi Sigurdsson are expected to spearhead Iceland’s attack, while Xherdan Shaqiri and Haris Seferovic should represent the main threat to Hannes Halldorsson’s goal.
