Girona vs Getafe

The stakes are high for last season’s La Liga surprise package, Girona, as they take on Getafe at the Estadio Municipal de Montilivi this weekend.

Girona’s season is steadily descending into chaos. After suffering an early Copa del Rey exit and bowing out of the Champions League at the league stage, they’ve dropped out of La Liga’s top six after losing three of their last four league outings (W1), including a 3-0 defeat at Athletic Bilbao a week ago. Only four points adrift of sixth-placed Rayo Vallecano, the Catalan minnows remain in contention for another European finish but must improve their indifferent home form. Indeed, only Real Sociedad (5) have suffered more home league losses among the current top-half sides than Girona’s four, with Michel’s side alternating between victories (3) and defeats (2) across their last five home outings in La Liga! But as each game in that sequence featured over 2.5 goals, this could be a fun contest.

Meanwhile, Getafe snatched a gutsy 1-0 win at Deportivo Alaves last weekend to extend their unbeaten league run to five games (W3, D2) and steer five points away from the bottom three. Interestingly, that was their third consecutive league victory on the road after going winless in their first eight top-flight away matches this season (D2, L6). Defensive solidity has been Getafe’s standout feature lately, with Jose Bordalas’ side keeping three successive clean sheets in La Liga for the first time since February 2020. Another shutout could be crucial, considering the visitors are yet to score in both halves of a La Liga away game this term!
