Freiburg vs Werder Bremen 23/05/20
23 May 2020
Freiburg welcome the struggling Werder Bremen to the Schwarzwald-Stadion, hoping to snap a three-game winless streak in the Bundesliga (BL) H2Hs (D2, L1).
The hosts have pulled off a 1-1 away draw against RB Leipzig last time out, which has seen them concede at least once in five consecutive league matches now. At home, it’s been ‘all or nothing’ for Freiburg in their past eight BL fixtures (W5, L3), with four of their five wins during that eight-game sequence yielding a narrow one-goal margin. A draw should be discarded here, considering only one of their last six BL home H2Hs has ended in a stalemate (W2, D1, L3). But, it will be vital for Freiburg to open the scoring here, as they returned just a single point from four BL home games in which they’ve allowed the opening goal.
On the other hand, Werder’s disastrous form in 2020 has continued after the coronavirus break, as they went 4-1 down to Bayer Leverkusen on home soil last time out. Indeed, they’ve barely secured one draw in seven league fixtures following a 1-0 win over Fortuna Dusseldorf at the beginning of the year, with five of their six defeats during that stretch coming via a margin of at least two goals. One of Werder’s main problems, when they play away from home, is a leaky defense that has allowed 29 goals on the road – the third joint-worst BL record. Lapses in concentration in the late stages of play have seen Werder concede at least once in the final 15 minutes of away action in ten of 13 BL road trips so far.
