Everton vs Liverpool 04/03/19

4 March 2019

The Merseyside rivals go toe-to-toe at Goodison Park as Everton welcome Liverpool, searching for their first triumph over arch-rivals since 2010.

Everton’s inability to keep consistency and win regularly currently puts them in the middle of the table with virtually no chance of reaching the European promotion. Midweek’s 3-0 road win over Cardiff City has brought the Toffees’ three-game PL losing streak to an end and has seen them scored three goals per match for the first time since December. However, Marco Silva has very few reasons for excitement as his team lost four of their last five PL home fixtures (W1, L4), conceding 2+ match goals three times in the process. Everton’s disastrous tally of six defeats in seven meetings with PL’s top-five teams (D1, L6) can’t comfort Silva either. Another disappointing fact for their fans is that Everton failed to beat Liverpool in seven consecutive H2H encounters at this venue (D6, L1).

On the other hand, the visitors have to pick up all three points here at all costs as they already allowed Manchester City to come just one point away from regaining the top spot in the Premier League table. Although unbeaten in their last seven PL outings, the Reds have pulled off ‘only’ four triumphs in that period, playing out three draws in the process. Two of those stalemates have come away from home, with both producing under 2.5 goals. A genuine reason for Jurgen Klopp’s concern is that his players secured two wins in their last five PL away clashes (W2, D2, L1), scoring only three goals in the previous four. Still, the PL leaders can proudly boast the best defensive road record having conceded just eight goals on 14 road trips this campaign.

All four of the previous H2H meetings between these two at Goodison Park have produced under 2.5 goals, with Everton scoring just one along the way.
