England vs Montenegro 15/11/19

15 November 2019

England welcome Montenegro to the Wembley Stadium in the 2020 UEFA European Championship qualifying (ECQ), looking to seal their place in the final tournament.

The hosts are on the verge of securing a spot in next summer’s tournament as they need to pick up only one point to progress from Group A. Sitting top of the section with an intimidating record (W5, L1), the Three Lions have won all three of their previous ECQ home matches, scoring at least four goals in each. In fact, Gareth Southgate’s men have racked up a six-game winning home run, keeping a clean sheet in four of those fixtures, friendlies included. Always looking to break their opponents in the early stages, England have netted at least one goal inside the opening 25 minutes in five of their six WCQ games so far. The only exception was a 5-1 demolition of Montenegro in the reversed fixture, where they still managed to score two goals in the first half.

Meanwhile, Montenegro can’t make any progress in the standings regardless of the outcome of this encounter, but a victory would see them make a breakthrough in Group A (D3, L4). However, the visitors head to London on a run of four successive WCQ matches without a single goal scored (D1, L3). Toothless in attack, the Brave Falcons have bagged in just three goals in the qualifying campaign – less than any other side in this group. What’s more, they have drawn a blank in three of their last four competitive road trips, scoring precisely one goal in two of the remaining three.
