Denmark vs England 09/09/20

09 September 2020

Denmark and England go head-to-head at the Parken Stadium in the second round of the UEFA Nations League Group A2 fixtures.

A 2-0 home loss to Belgium last weekend gave Denmark a first defeat in the Nations League (W2, D2). Four of those five fixtures produced under 2.5 goals and saw only one side get on the scoresheet. Notably, before losing to Belgium, the hosts had gone 23 competitive games unbeaten (W13, D10). Additionally, ‘Danish Dynamite’ had conceded only twice in six competitive home matches in the post-World Cup period before the weekend’s failure (W4, D2). Curiously, it’s only their fourth meeting with England on home soil this century, with the last three all producing over 2.5 goals and two seeing the winner on the day prevail by a full-time margin of at least two goals (W1, L2).

Meanwhile, England survived a late drama to beat Iceland 1-0 on the road in their group opener, bringing their winning run in all competitions to four. Each win saw the ‘Three Lions’ keep a clean sheet and find the net at least once inside the final ten minutes of play. A victory in Iceland means England have now conceded one goal or less in five of seven matches in this competition. Notably, they have lost only once in nine competitive trips (90 minutes only) during the post-World Cup period (W5, D3), shutting out their rivals five times in the process. But, going back to 2014, Gareth Southgate’s men have endured mixed fortunes on the road against the teams currently in the Nations League A, friendlies included (W5, D2, L3).
