Chelsea vs Ajax 06/11/19

6 November 2019

Chelsea and Ajax go head-to-head at Stamford Bridge for a crucial UEFA Champions League (CL) encounter that will probably determine the winners of Group H.

After a frustrating 1-0 home loss to Valencia in the CL curtain-raiser, the hosts have moved through the gears, securing back-to-back away wins over Lille and Ajax to move top of the group. Interestingly, all three of Chelsea’s opening group matches have seen winners of the day score the winning goal beyond the 70th minute after a halftime deadlock. Also, the Blues boast a perfect H2H record against the Dutch clubs (W3), having scored seven goals and conceded just two across those clashes. However, Chelsea’s indifferent home form in all competitions can be an issue (W3, D2, L3), especially as they’ve failed to keep a clean sheet in six of those matches.

Meanwhile, the visitors’ perfect start to Group H has suffered a setback with Matchday 3 loss to Chelsea, and they will be looking to turn the tables on the English giants on foreign soil. Outstandingly, the Lancers have won five consecutive CL away fixtures, qualifying excluded, scoring 2+ match goals four times while keeping a clean sheet on three occasions along the way. However, Ajax’s dismal away record against the Premier League sides on English soil can be a major influence here (W3, D5, L4). In contrast to that record stands Ajax’s strong record of two wins, two draws, and a loss against the London-based clubs. The reigning Eredivisie champions tended to start fast their CL games, scoring three of total six CL goals inside the opening 35 minutes.
