Borussia Mönchengladbach vs AS Roma 08/11/19
8 November 2019
Borussia Mönchengladbach welcome AS Roma to the Borussia-Park looking to kick-start their UEFA Europa League (EL) campaign.
Shockingly, the hosts are the only side in Group J that is yet to pick up a single win (D2, L1), but even though they sit bottom of the standings, they are still only three points adrift of top-of-the-table Roma. After a disastrous 4-0 home defeat to Wolfsberger, the Foals have played out back-to-back 1-1 draws with Istanbul Basaksehir and Roma. Both of those stalemates have seen Monchengladbach’s rivals blowing the lead in stoppage time. Mönchengladbach will be looking to erase Roma’s advantage by posting their first EL home victory since 2014/15. Uncomfortable in Europe, the current Bundesliga toppers have failed to secure a win in their last six European home matches (D3, L3). Still, Marco Rose’s men have gone from three consecutive home games in all competitions without a win (D1, L2) to three successive triumphs, all of which have seen them score 2+ match goals and concede at least one.
Meanwhile, the visitors have started their European campaign off on the right foot, clinching a 4-0 home win over Istanbul Basaksehir but have failed to build on that. Both of Roma’s EL draws this term have seen them take a 1-0 lead into halftime and drop it in the second half. The ‘Giallorossi’ have, however, gone down in ten of their 13 trips to Germany (W2, D1), picking up just one point in the last four away matches against the Bundesliga sides. But, Paulo Fonseca’s players have not lost a single competitive away game this season (W3, D3), keeping a clean sheet in three of their previous four road trips in all competitions. Still, in the same sequence, they have netted one goal or less on three occasions, failing to find the net in the first 45 minutes twice in the process.
