Borussia Dortmund vs Tottenham Hotspur 06/03/19

6 March 2019

After suffering a horror 3-0 defeat at the Wembley Stadium, Borussia Dortmund will welcome Tottenham Hotspur to the Signal Iduna Park for the return leg of their Champions League last-16 clashes.

The hosts need a miracle to advance to the quarter-finals, especially considering their recent form. Lucien Favre and his men come into this meeting off the back of a shock 2-1 road loss to Augsburg that has seen them allow Bayern Munich to match their tally of 54 points and join the top spot of the Bundesliga. What’s more, the Black and Yellows have pulled off just one triumph in seven games across all competitions in February (W1, D3, L3). BVB’s drop off in form has seen them win one of their last three competitive home clashes (W1, D1, L1), conceding 2+ match goals twice in the process. Dortmund’s defensive frailties have prevented Favre’s players from keeping a clean sheet in eight successive home outings. However, the Bundesliga heavyweights have been impressive in the final third, especially when playing at the Signal Iduna Park, scoring over 1.5 goals per match nine times in a row.

Meanwhile, the visitors are one step away from securing their first Champions League quarter-finals appearance since 2011 although they still have work to do. Winless in their last three PL fixtures (D1, L2), the Spurs hope they can repeat last year’s success when they outplayed BVB in Germany in the CL group stage. However, winning away from home is easier said than done for the Premier League giants, according to their recent displays. Mauricio Pochettino’s players have lost on four consecutive road trips across all competitions, conceding over 1.5 goals per match each time. In the same period, the Lilywhites have scored just two goals, failing to find the net in the first half in all four games.
