Borussia Dortmund vs Stuttgart 09/03/19
09 March 2019
Borussia Dortmund and Stuttgart will face each other at the Signal Iduna Park as both sides desperately seek three points to achieve their own goals.
Only a month ago, the hosts seemed to be cruising towards the Bundesliga title, but a poor haul of one victory in their previous five league outings (W1, D3, L1) has brought their title hopes in jeopardy. Currently sharing the top spot with Bayern Munich, the Black and Yellow have to bounce back after a 2-1 road loss to Augsburg to avoid seeing the silverware slipping through their hands again. Lucien Favre’s men have secured more home triumphs than any other team in the German top tier (10), as they remain the only unbeaten BL home side after 12 home fixtures (W10, D2). What’s more, BVB (40) boast by far the best offensive home record in the German top flight, bagging an average of 3.33 goals scored per match. The one thing Favre has to be careful about is that his players have failed to preserve a clean slate in seven consecutive home clashes across all competitions, conceding over 1.5 goals per match three times in the process.
On the other hand, the visitors have managed to bring a disastrous eight-game winless Bundesliga run (D2, L6) to an end thanks to a stunning 5-1 home triumph over Hannover 96 last time out. If they can take advantage of BVB’s drop-off in form, the Reds could put back-to-back BL wins together for the first time this campaign. A positive outcome here is a must for Markus Weinzierl’s players as they trail the Bundesliga safety by two points. However, collecting points away from home is easier said than done for Stuttgart considering just 26.32% of their overall point tally have come on the road. Not only the Swabians pulled off barely one triumph on 12 BL road trips (W1, D2, L9), but they have lost five of their last six away meetings (D1, L5), scoring just two goals in the process. Also, only one team has bagged fewer goals away from home than Stuttgart (8), with Weinzierl’s men scoring 2+ match goals just once this campaign.
