New Borussia Dortmund manager Niko Kovac has seemingly steadied the ship since taking charge of the club, inspiring them to a four-game unbeaten streak in all competitions (W2, D2), bookended by a 1-1 draw against Lille in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie. More importantly, Kovac has led ‘Die Borussen’ to back-to-back Bundesliga victories for the first time this season, with each triumph coming ‘to nil,’ including a 2-0 win at St. Pauli last weekend. However, Dortmund can’t afford to rest on their laurels as they entered this round seven points adrift of fourth-placed Eintracht Frankfurt! On the bright side, a 6-0 demolition of Union Berlin in their last league outing at Signal Iduna Park put an emphatic stop to a dismal five-game winless home league run (D3, L2).

In the meantime, Augsburg’s first league clean sheet against Freiburg in over a decade saw them draw 0-0 at home last weekend, extending their unbeaten run in the Bundesliga to eight matches (W4, D4). That’s their longest undefeated streak in the top flight since 2013/14, while it’s also worth noting they’ve not conceded in any of their last four league games – three of which ended goalless. Against this backdrop, this could be a goal-glutted encounter, considering five of Augsburg’s six most recent Bundesliga visits to Dortmund’s home ground have featured over 3.5 goals and both teams on the scoresheet, with Jess Thorup’s side losing on each occasion.
