Belgium vs Iceland 09/09/20

09 September 2020

Belgium will be looking to maintain a 100% home run against Iceland when the two nations lock horns at the King Baudouin Stadium in the UEFA Nations League Group A2 this midweek.

Belgium started their Nations League campaign with a 2-0 away triumph over Denmark, extending their winning run across various competitions to 11. Remarkably, each of those 11 successes has yielded at least a two-goal margin, with eight seeing ‘De Rode Duivels’ keep a clean sheet. Free-scoring Belgium have netted an average of 3.81 goals across those victories, with 61.9% of the goals scored coming in the first half of play (26/42). Also, ever since a 1-1 draw with Greece back in 2017, Roberto Martinez’s men have racked up nine consecutive home triumphs in all competitions, beating their rivals via 3+ goal margin on six of those occasions.

Meanwhile, a dismal 1-0 home loss to England in their Group A2 curtain-raiser now means the visitors have lost all five of their Nations League fixtures, drawing a blank four times in the process. Moreover, going back to 2015, the ‘Strákarnir okkar’ have lost five of their last six competitive clashes against the teams currently in the Nations League League A (D1). Frustratingly for the traveling side, each of those defeats yielded a full-time margin of over 1.5 goals, four of which witnessed Iceland ship the opener inside the opening 15 minutes. Interestingly, just one of their seven competitive trips post World Cup has ended in a draw (W2, L4), with four of those results (wins/losses) seeing the winner on the day keep a blank sheet.
