Bayern Munich vs Borussia Monchengladbach
Allianz Arena sets the stage for a handsomely-looking Bundesliga clash between newly-crowned champions Bayern Munich and Borussia Monchengladbach.
It’s party time in Munich after Bayer Leverkusen’s slump last weekend saw Bayern secure a record-extending 34th Bundesliga title despite drawing 3-3 at RB Leipzig. Meanwhile, it’s also Thomas Muller’s farewell appearance at the Allianz as he prepares to hoist his 13th top-flight title during a trophy-laden 25-year stint in Munich. The same goes for Harry Kane, whose career-long wait for a trophy finally came to a well-deserved end. Vincent Kompany’s men will aim to celebrate in style on their home patch, where they’ve been near-flawless all season, losing just once in 16 league matches (W13, D2). Gladbach’s visit shouldn’t pose any threat to Bayern’s celebratory mood, considering a slender 1-0 win in January’s reverse fixture extended their winning H2h streak to three matches.
However, Borussia Monchengladbach have beaten the record-time German champions more often (28 times) than any other team in Bundesliga history. That may inspire some confidence around the traveling camp, even though the visitors entered this round amid a dismal five-game winless league run (D2, L3), bookended by a remarkable 4-4 home draw against TSG Hoffenheim last weekend. Another stalemate would at least help ‘Die Fohlen’ avoid losing four consecutive league meetings with Bayern since 1967. Worryingly, Gerardo Seoane’s men have gone winless in all nine top-flight encounters against teams starting this matchday in the top five this term (D2, L7), highlighting the magnitude of the task ahead.
