Austria vs Poland 22/03/19
22 March 2019
The European Championship Group Group G opener between Austria and Poland that will take place at the Ernst Happel Stadion will see the visitors trying to snap a six-game winless run (D3, L3).
After failing to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the hosts have raised their game for a while but have struggled to reach the top spot in their respective UEFA Nations League group, finishing as runners-up behind Bosnia and Herzegovina. A lack of consistency followed by a lot of ups and downs has seen Das Team win two of their last five clashes (W2, D1, L2). In that period, Franco Foda’s men have failed to find the back of the net in all three games that have not ended in their favor. What’s more, four of Austria’s last five games have produced under 2.5 goals, with just one producing goals on both ends.
Meanwhile, the visitors seem to have never managed to bounce back after the World Cup fiasco. After exiting the final tournament in the group stage, the Eagles have struggled to pick up all three points in all four of their competitive games in the post-World Cup period (D2, L2). Furthermore, the White and Reds have failed to keep a clean sheet in all six games after returning from Russia although they’ve allowed over 1.5 goals per match only once during the run. Still, Jerzy Brzęczek is much more worried about the fact his players have struggled to hit the net twice in that period, scoring 2+ match goals barely once in the process.
