Augsburg vs Paderborn 28/05/20
28 May 2020
Augsburg and Paderborn will face-off at the WWK Arena in the bottom-half-of-the-table Bundesliga (BL) clash.
A stunning 3-0 away victory over Schalke 04 at the weekend has brought Augsburg’s disastrous six-game winless league streak to a halt (D1, L5), seeing them extend the lead on relegation-threatened Fortuna Dusseldorf to six points. However, the hosts have pulled off just a single win in five BL home fixtures since the turn of 2020 (W1, D1, L3), as they now look to improve that record against a side they’ve beaten in three consecutive competitive home H2Hs. The WWK Arena has been a venue of entertainment since the calendar flipped, though, with each of Augsburg’s five top-flight matches here seeing both teams on the scoresheet and four producing over 2.5 goals.
As for the visitors, they enter this round on a dismal eight-game winless league run (D3, L5) having scored under 1.5 goals in each of their last four BL fixtures. Nailed to the bottom of the table, with a nine-point deficit to the safe zone, Steffen Baumgart’s players desperately need to pick up three points here to keep their hopes of avoiding relegation alive. But, to do that, Paderborn have to open the scoring as they did in just four of 13 BL road trips so far this season. Indeed, their inability to react after conceding first has seen them return only one point from eight league away games in which they’ve shipped the opener (D1, L7).
