Augsburg vs Freiburg

High-flying Freiburg head to the WWK Arena to take on bottom-half Augsburg in a tasty-looking Bundesliga fixture.

Augsburg’s remarkable seven-game unbeaten Bundesliga streak (W4, D3), bookended by a 3-0 rout of Borussia Monchengladbach last weekend, contributed to the club’s best point tally at this stage of a top-flight season since 2018! Furthermore, the hosts head into proceedings having kept three consecutive clean sheets in the Bundesliga and could make it four in a row for the first time in club history. However, that could be easier said than done, considering they’ve failed to register a shutout against Freiburg in almost ten years! Bucking that trend would require Jess Thorup’s side to defy a dreadful record of no win against sides starting the round inside the top eight this season (D4, L6).

In the meantime, Freiburg’s dream of securing a first-ever top-four finish in the Bundesliga is firmly on track after manager Julian Schuster oversaw victories in all four league games in February. Moreover, Freiburg kept a clean sheet on each occasion, including a 5-0 thrashing of Werder Bremen last weekend! As if that’s not encouraging enough, the visitors have gone from seven consecutive away league matches without a win (D2, L5) to back-to-back top-flight victories on the road. Yet, it’s worth noting that both wins came against teams starting this round in the bottom four and yielding a narrow 1-0 scoreline, suggesting a tight contest could be on the cards.
