Atletico Madrid vs Juventus 19/09/19
19 September 2019
Atletico Madrid and Juventus go head-to-head at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano, but unlike last year when the two sides met in the UEFA Champions League (CL) round of 16, they will now face-off in the Group D opener. It will be their fifth CL H2H since the turn of the new millennium, with Atletico coming off better twice so far (W2, D1, L1), with none of those four fixtures seeing both teams score.
The hosts will have revenge on their minds after seeing their Cl ambitions ended by Juventus’ impressive second-leg comeback last season. Los Colchoneros’ recent home record against the Serie A sides (W6) gives them every right to look for three points here, especially as they’ve netted 14 goals and allowed just one across those fixtures. What’s more, the Madrid heavyweights have racked up a nine-game winning European home streak ahead of this clash, conceding just one goal during the run. Ruthless when at home, Diego Simeone’s men have beaten their rivals by a comfortable two-goal margin in all four of their CL home matches last term – three times by the identical 2-0 scoreline.
Meanwhile, the undisputed Serie A champions will try to put an end to their three-game winless CL away run (D1, L2), as they look to advance to the knockout phase for the 17th time. Curiously, while all five of Juventus’ CL wins last season saw them beat their opponents to nil, each of their four defeats witnessed them concede precisely two goals. Interestingly, although they’ve struggled to pick up a single CL away win last season, the Bianconeri have put together six consecutive road triumphs prior. The Old Lady’s overall away record against the Spanish teams should worry Maurizio Sarri (W6, D6, L17) even though his side won four of their last five clashes with La Liga rivals (W4, L1).
