Atletico Madrid vs Girona 03/04/19

3 April 2019

Atletico Madrid and Girona go head-to-head at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano for La Liga fixture that sees the hosts going after their elusive first win over the Catalan side since they joined the Spanish top flight in 2017.

Surprisingly all five of the previous H2H meetings between these two teams have ended without a winner (D5), with three of those draws ending with the same 1-1 scoreline.

The two have already faced off against each other three times this year, with Girona managing to dump Atletico out of Copa del Rey thanks to a 3-3 stalemate in Madrid after a 1-1 draw at the Estadio Municipal de Montilivi.

Sitting 10 points adrift of league leaders Barcelona with nine matchdays left, Los Colchoneros can’t afford a failure here especially as they take on the Catalans in a head-to-head clash next weekend. Far more lethal at home, Diego Simeone’s men have secured 11 of their 17 LL triumphs at this venue, with only Barca boasting better LL home record than Atletico (W11, D3, L1). Interestingly, all nine of Atletico’s last home wins across all competitions have seen them beating their rivals to nil, with Los Rojiblancos scoring 2+ match goals six times in the process.

Meanwhile, two wins in their last four LL outings (W2, L2) have helped the visitors to create a comfortable six-point gap on 18th-placed Celta Vigo, but they have a long way to go before preserving the top-flight status. Girona’s sudden rise has seen them go from five consecutive LL road failures (D1, L4) to three back-to-back wins, with the Blanquivermells scoring exactly two goals per match in each success. But, Girona’s defensive frailties have seen them failed to preserve a clean slate in seven of their last nine LL away clashes, with Eusebio Sacristán’s men allowing over 1.5 goals per match four times though.
