Atletico Madrid vs Bayer Leverkusen 23/10/19

23 October 2019

Atletico Madrid will aim to stretch their unbeaten home run in all competitions to 16 games (W10, D4) when they take on Bayer Leverkusen in the UEFA Champions League (CL) Group D at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano this week.

Unbeaten in the opening two CL matches (W1, D1), the hosts will also look to extend their unbeaten run in H2H meetings with Bayer Leverkusen to four straight games (W2, D1). Both of Atletico’s CL fixtures so far have sparked into life in the second half, with all six CL match goals scored/conceded coming after the break. However, Diego Simeone’s men have won just two of their last eight games in all competitions (W2, D5, L1), with each of these results (win/loss) coming via the identical 2-0 scoreline. Unprolific in the final third, Los Colchoneros have struggled to find the net in three of their last six competitive matches. A big encouragement for the home fans is that Atletico have not lost a single European clash against a German opponent at home since the turn of the new millennium (W7, D2).

Meanwhile, rock-bottom visitors have lost both of their opening games in Group D, each by conceding at least two goals and scoring one or less. Moreover, Die Werkself go into this encounter on the back of a disappointing 3-0 away loss to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga, having stretched their winless streak in all competitions to three games (D1, L2). Leverkusen have not enjoyed traveling to Spain either, losing on 12 of their 18 visits (W3, D3). Curiously, while Peter Bosz’s men won both of their competitive away matches this season by scoring exactly three goals per fixture and restricting their rivals to a maximum of one, each of their three away defeats has seen them draw a blank and concede at least three goals.
