Arsenal vs Southampton 23/11/19

23 November 2019

An out-of-sorts Arsenal side welcome relegation-threatened Southampton to the Emirates Stadium, looking to return to the winning ways in the Premier League (PL).

Although they have endured a mixed start to the season, the hosts are unbeaten in the opening six PL home matches (W3, D3). In fact, 12 of their total 17 league points have come at the Emirates (70%), and 11 of their 16 PL goals scored also arrived on home turf (68%). However, four consecutive PL games without a victory (D2, L2) have left the Gunners eight points adrift of fourth-placed Manchester City ahead of this weekend’s kick-off. There is a good chance that Unai Emery’s men can snap that winless streak, as they’ve won all three of their previous PL home H2H clashes against Southampton. Also, two of their last PL H2Hs here have seen Arsenal bag two first-half goals.

Meanwhile, the visitors are going through a challenging period, having lost six of their previous seven PL outings (D1, L6). Five of those defeats have seen Southampton score precisely one goal per match and concede at least two, with three of them coming via the same 2-1 scoreline. Moreover, the Saints have netted one goal or less in five of six PL road trips so far, with a 2-0 win over Brighton being the only exception. Curiously though, seven of their total eight PL points have come away from home, with Ralph Hasenhüttl’s men allowing just eight of 29 PL goals conceded away from St. Mary’s Stadium (27%).
