Argentina vs Mexico 11/09/19
11 September 2019
Argentina and Mexico will face-off at the Alamodome in San Antonio for an international friendly fixture.
It will be Argentina’s second post-Copa America fixture following a goalless draw with Chile last time out. Lionel Scaloni’s side finished third in the 2019 Copa America by beating Chile 2-1 in the third-place play-off clash after losing 2-0 to arch-rivals Brazil in the semis. Four of their five results in the prestigious tournament have ended with the same 2-0 scoreline (W2, L2). Three of those games followed the same scenario with one of the rivals picking up a first-half lead inside the opening 20 minutes before going for the second goal in the closing 20 minutes of the encounter. Just four of Argentina’s ten games since the turn of the year have seen both teams score with only three of them featuring over 2.5 goals.
Meanwhile, the Mexicans have been going from strength to strength ever since Gerardo Martino took charge of the national team back in March. Still unbeaten as the Mexico head coach, Martino has witnessed his team pick up nine wins withing 90 minutes in 11 outings during his tenure (W9, D2). Eight of those triumphs have seen El Tri score three or more goals with three of those successes being accompanied by a clean sheet. Interestingly, back-to-back losses to Argentina, both by the identical 2-0 scoreline, have cost the previous manager, Juan Carlos Osorio, his job. Therefore, Mexico will have revenge on their minds even though their recent H2H record against Argentina can be intimidating for their fans. El Tri have lost five of their last seven clashes with the South American giants (W1, D1, L5), conceding two or more goals across all of those failures.
