Argentina VS Brazil

One of international football’s fiercest rivalries rekindles this week as Argentina host bitter rivals Brazil in Buenos Aires for a mouth-watering 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

Argentina come into this World Cup qualifying round sitting atop the South American section, having accumulated 28 points from 13 matches (W9, D1, L3), following a hard-earned 1-0 win in Uruguay last week. Confidence should be sky-high ahead of their return to Estadio Monumental, as Lionel Scaloni’s charges have won seven of their eight most recent World Cup qualifiers on home soil (L1). This outstanding success has been driven by Argentina’s unparalleled defensive solidity, with all seven home victories during this stretch coming without conceding. Furthermore, the reigning world champions have kept an impressive 11 clean sheets in their last 12 home World Cup qualifying matches dating back to September 2021, highlighting the magnitude of the task awaiting Brazil in Buenos Aires.

However, Argentina’s formidable defensive record could face significant pressure as Brazil travel south, especially after their thrilling 2-1 victory over Colombia in their latest World Cup qualifier. That win came with a dramatic 99th-minute goal, sparking massive celebrations as their previously uncertain path to the 2026 World Cup now appears much more secure. Dorival Junior’s men are seemingly back on track after only winning one of their first six World Cup qualifying games (D1, L4). However, a more reassuring five-game unbeaten run (W3, D2) has put them in a strong position to secure the top-six finish required to qualify for next summer’s final tournament in North America.
